In keeping with our look at popular cloud backup services, today we’re going to take a look at: iCloud. If you need a primer on backups in general start here.
Aside from the concerns I shared about Amazon (that I also share regarding Apple) this is a good option...if you’re already in Apple’s ‘walled garden’ and don’t plan to back-up photos from anything other than your iPhone.
Free Storage Option: 5GB
Paid Storage Option/Annual Cost: 50GB, 200GB & 1TB / $12, $48 & $120 per year, respectively
Compression: Optional
JPG Support: Yes
TIFF Support: Yes
RAW Support: Yes
Device Support: Designed for Apple devices
Ease of Backup: Automated
Ease of Restoring: Automated
Other Benefits: Not limited to a photo-backup solution. Photos are available on all your devices.
Privacy: Better than most.
Licensing: Users retain licensing rights and ownership of their photos and files. (Yay!!)
Again, just wish that the pricing/storage options for this service were more competitive with other options we’ve looked at. 1TB for $120/year is not much if you wish to backup RAW files.
Next week, we’ll take a closer look at OneDrive.
